Choosing a Photographer

* Good photographers are often booked up a year in advance, especially for popular dates throughout the summer, Christmas, Easter and Bank Holidays, so it is a good idea to start looking for your photographer as soon as you have booked your venue.

* Associations such as The Master Photographers Association, British Institute of Professional Photographers and The Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers all have directories of their qualified members on their websites. These members have to provide good quality panels of work to be judged in order to receive their qualifications.

* Try to meet at least three photographers if possible to check various styles and the costs involved. Always bear in mind that the photographer will be with you for most of the day, so make sure it is someone you feel comfortable with and that you will be willing to be directed by as needed on the day itself.

* When viewing a photographers work, try to view a full wedding album rather than lots of individual shots from lots of weddings - you want to be sure they can take consistently good photos throughout the day.

* Make sure the person you meet is the photographer who will be with you on the day and that it is their work you are viewing - some studios will have a few photographers at their disposal and obviously display their best work.

* Before you finalise your booking make sure you have discussed all the costs that will be involved so you have no nasty surprises at the end that you may not have budgeted for. Check whether the photographer needs to be fed on your day.

* Do not expect that you will receive the negatives or full resolution images after your wedding. If this is something you want then check with your photographer before booking as generally they keep the originals and the copyright.

* Finally once you have chosen and booked your photographer be sure to let your parents know what style to expect - if you have booked reportage coverage let them know there may not be lots of posed shots.
